Cortec VpCI-368 Corrosion Preventive Compound
MIL-PRF-16173E Grade 1 | Solvent-Based | Ships Next Business Day
Cortec VpCI-368 is a solvent-based corrosion preventive compound that dries to a firm, moisture-displacing wax film on metal surfaces. It is engineered for multi-metal protection in harsh outdoor and unsheltered conditions — UV exposure, salt spray, humidity cycling, and long-duration outdoor storage. Apply by spray, brush, roller, or mop. No mixing required.
When protection is no longer needed, the film removes cleanly with an alkaline cleaner or mineral spirits.
What VpCI-368 Does
VpCI-368 dries to a firm, wax-like film at 2–3 mils (50–75 µm) dry film thickness. It is moisture-displacing — it pushes water off the metal surface on contact rather than forming a barrier over standing moisture. Coverage runs 300–330 square feet per gallon at 3 mils. Touch-dry time is 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on temperature, airflow, and humidity. Full dry time is 12–24 hours.
The cured film is UV resistant, flexible, and heat stable to 392°F (200°C). It passes ASTM B-117 salt spray, ASTM D-1748 humidity cabinet, and ASTM D-1735 water fog testing. Multi-metal protection covers carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and cast iron.
Applications
Industrial Storage, Layup, and Transit
VpCI-368 covers three stages of a metal component's lifecycle: layup and mothballing of idle equipment, preparation for transit and export shipment, and outdoor storage of parts and assemblies with no additional protective covering. Documented applications include wire rope, steel plate, machined parts, pipe, flanges, and structural steel.
For facilities managing equipment through extended idle periods — planned shutdowns, capital project delays, or long-term spare parts inventory — VpCI-368 provides durable protection without the removal difficulty of petrolatum-based compounds.
Marine and Offshore
Salt air, persistent humidity, and UV exposure are constants in marine environments. VpCI-368 performs in these conditions without degrading or washing off prematurely. It is suitable for protection of vessels, offshore platforms, dock equipment, and marine hardware during layup, transit, and outdoor storage. Cortec documents its use in marine equipment mothballing and layup across global operations. Cortec
Oil and Gas — OCTG Casing Threads and Tubular Goods
In oil country tubular goods (OCTG) applications, VpCI-368 is applied by spray or mop to threaded connections on casing and tubing. For dopeless premium thread systems, VpCI-368 is engineered to remain on the connection from mill to pipe yard through run-in, providing continuous corrosion protection across the full handling and installation cycle without introducing the environmental liabilities associated with lead-based or heavy-metal thread compounds.
The wax film protects precision-machined thread geometry during outdoor yard storage, cross-country and offshore transit, and field handling — the three points in the tubular goods lifecycle where thread damage and corrosion losses are highest.
Cortec documents VpCI-368 use in oil and gas rig stacking, drill ship warm-stacking, and tubular goods preservation applications.

Application
Apply by spray, brush, roller, or mop. No mixing required. The substrate should be free of grease, oil, dirt, fingerprints, and any other contamination that could affect adhesion. For casing and tubular goods thread protection, spray or mop application delivers consistent coverage on both box and pin connections.
Clean equipment with solvent immediately after use while the coating is still wet. Once cured, clean with an alkaline cleaner.
Spray equipment: conventional or HVLP at 45–55 psi, tip 0.02"–0.11". Airless at 1,800–2,500 psi, tip 0.015"–0.035".
Why Order from Corrosion Technologies
Corrosion Technologies has been manufacturing and distributing specialty corrosion prevention chemistry since 1993. We hold our own MIL-SPEC qualifications across multiple product lines and carry Cortec VpCI-368 because it addresses applications where a heavy-duty, removable wax-film compound is the right answer — particularly outdoor storage, marine layup, and OCTG thread protection.
Orders ship next business day from Garland, TX. Technical questions get answered by people who understand corrosion chemistry.
